I will be traveling to Japan for the first time soon, and I am not very familiar with airports to begin with, so I had a few questions. I will be traveling to Narita International Airport, Terminal 1.

1. When I first get off of the plane, where do I go? Is the first place Customs, or do I get my luggage first?

2. If someone is meeting me at the airport, will I be able to see the person as soon as I get off of the plane? Or will I have to go through Security/Customs first?

3. At the Customs section, what exactly happens? Will my luggage be searched?

Well, thank you in advance!

1. You go through the customes with your luggege, so the immigration first, luggege second, and the customs third.

2. They have to wait outside the restricted area (customes, etc.). They will know where to wait if you tell them in advance which flight you're taking.

3. The customes officer will ask you routine questions (if you have anything to declare, etc.). In many cases the search is a mere formality, but they have the right to conduct a through search of the luggege and sometimes do.

In general, just follow the other passengers and you'll be fine. Have a nice trip!

Let's see here... Narita International Airport is about 80km away from the center of Tokyo which converts to 14 hours by foot. Don't plan on walking to/from Narita airport on foot unless you're an Olympic athlete. The closest city is Narita, but you can't walk there, and there isn't much to see in Narita. If your flight only stops for 5 hours, you shouldn't even go wandering out of the airport, or else you will have a 99.99% chance of missing your flight. You can go exploring inside the airport, as there is plenty to see in the airport itself.

Also, make sure that the person meeting you knows your airline. There are 2 terminals. The one you arrive in is determined by your airline.
Narita is one of the most efficient airports in the world and every help desk has an english-speaking person, so do not worry.
They have sniffer dogs around the luggage carousel. Most likely, your luggage willl not be searched. Just walk through the "no declarations' line.

Arrival Narita, 1st place is customs, you just follow ppl then have to stand in a queue. Depend on the day but it will take about 45' to 01 hours wait for check in and note that they have 2 different customs for Japanese passport and foreigner passport. Japan customs is not so strictly but if 1s time landing to Japan, they will ask you some questions, just be confident and answer them clearly
After that, you will go to get you luggage...Normally they will not check luggage at Security but depend on.
You only can see your friends after get through all that process and go out the gate

Following will give you an overview of the arrival procedure that you will follow at Terminal 1

You won't see your pickup party until you've cleared security, have your luggage and are finished with the outlined procedure but don't worry, it goes smoothly.

Luggage may be inspected, it is a random thing, most agents let you through with no fussing.

In my experience NRT customs aren't particularly strict. I've never had my luggage searched going through there more times than I can count.
