Hard work, talent, luck........
Acting is probably one of the most difficult industries. Don't give up just because it's hard, but make sure you're prepared. Most of it relies on talent, enormous emounts of it. I am not saying you can't do it, but be aware that not many people can. It's the equivalent of being born with super powers. But, someone's got to have them, so why can't it be you?
To find out, I would take some acting classes at a JC or a community center.
Also, go to Borders or some other bookstore and get a few books on acting. Even though most of it relies on talent, there are tons of things you can't know without being told. Plus, some advice from 'experts' is always helpful. Experts doesn't always mean 'best' either though, so make sure to be careful who you trust in this world :-).
Good luck!

A good start is to look in your local newspaper for upcoming shows and auditions. Every city has at least one community theatre. Find a local playhouse and learn what shows are coming up. Give it your all and keep auditioning if you get rejected. Its not easy (otherwise we'd have more celebrities than lawyers, insurance salesmen, etc.) but if it's something you really want and work for, you can do it. You'll make a name for yourself which will lead to connections. You don't have to start somewhere big to make it there.

You have to live in a city where there is a lot of acting work in theatre, movies and television, such as New York City and Los Angeles.
You can start in the city where you live and later move to NYC or L.A.
