My sister in law had her water broken with a catheter, and she was still in labor for almost 2 days.

Ok, here's how it works.
You go in for the induction and they give you the petocin and break your water at nearly the same time. The petocin is the drug that makes your uterus contract. Breaking the water is painful for some women, not painful for others. It's sort of like sex... it hurts for some women the first time, and for others not at all. For me, breaking my water hurt. It was like something was pinching me (which is actually what they do... the implement looks like a really long crochet hook) and all I could do was curl and cry. But it was over soon. I was at 3 cm when I went in to the hospital, and in less than an hour moved to 5 cm. You can get the epidural anywhere from 3-6 depending on your doctor, but hold out until you at least get to 5 if you can. Contractions really aren't that bad. After 6 cm most docs will hesitate on giving you the epidural because it takes so long to get the anesthesiologist to your room that by then you're so far along if they numb you then you might not be able to feel the contractions to push... which can throw you into a c-section and you DO NOT want that. Recovery time is SO much longer.
My guess is since you're already at 4 cm that your labor won't last long. It hurts, but think of it this way: it's one day in your life. That's it. One day out of 80 years. Not bad when you put it in that perspective, huh?
Good luck!

Rupturing the membranes causes pressure on the cervix, sometimes starting labor. You are already dilated to 4, which is the longest part and you can probably have the epidural any time you think the pain is too much, until about 7-8. It is too late then. Just tell them ahead of time that you want, there is paperwork. I hope you get it..I didn't and I was in labor 56 hours the second time.

I had my labor induced. Then i got the epidural after about 9 hours of labor and then my water was ruptured. I think after 6 or 7 cm it is too late to get the epidural. But i could be wrong.

With my first my water broke at home at 10am, labor didn't start on it's own, so at midnight they started me on pitocin. They can't give you an epidural until you are at least 4 cm so I was in labor until 5pm the next evening before I had an epidural and an emergency c-section.
Good Luck!

I got induced first and then they broke my water, I was in labor for 8 hours. You can get the epidural as soo as you are ready, unless the hospital has a limit as to when it is too early, but trust me you will know when you are ready for the epidural, I got mine about 3pm and I got induced at 7:45am, I origanally wasn't going to get the epidural cause I did it the first two times without it, but this time the contractions were a lot harder so I buckled, I thought it was too late bit it actually made things go faster, by the time they were finally done giving me the epidural I had her at 4:09 pm. Sorry if that was too much info, just trying to explain when I got mine.

My water brock on its own at 1:30 am and at 8:00 am I was still not in active labor so they had to give me pitocin this was at 9 and at 2 she was born as far as the apidural I got mine at about 10-or 11 not sure. I would let the nurse know you are thinking about getting an epidural and you would like to know when it would be to late to ask for one. Good luck

With my first child, they broke my water to speed up labor, but not to start it. I really regretted it, though. I had planned on having a completely unmedicated birth, but after they broke my water the contractions changed to rapidly for me to adjust and I ended up getting a shot of demorol, which just made everything worse. With my second child, I didn't let them break the bag (and used a nurse midwife) and I had a much easier completely unmedicated delivery with less postpartum pain.
I believe that they normally will allow you to have an epidural around six centimeters of dilation. I'm not sure if you have to be a certain percentage effaced, too, or not. Whether or not you will have time to have one will depend on how rapidly your labor starts and progresses once they have broken your water and dosed you with pitocin. I don't think they will give you and epidural once you hit eight centimeters.
Check with you doctor, though.

I was induced (broke my water) with my child(first & only). They broke it at 7:13 am and I had my son at 9:55 am. I probably went halfway through that time without the epidural but then I eventually got it. I heard the epidural slows down the labor process, but I think 2 hours and 43 minutes is pretty darn fast! Now, your supposed to go faster with each child after...but how much faster am I going to get with this one?? (5 weeks prego.) LoL

Ummm....with my first child I went to the hospital because I felt some strong contractions and they didn't really break my water until 6 hours into labor because they wanted to see if it will break by itself. I had my epidural only 3 hours during my labor because the contractions was getting unbearable, and that was before they ruptured my water bag. Same with the delivery on my second child, it's just that it went more quicker than the first one.Good luck tomorrow and I hope you will have a safe delivery.

It should work considering you are that far dilated, they did it for me with both of my children and it worked both times. When you go in, let them know you want the epidural. They will give it up to 7-8 cm. I got the epidural both times about an hour after my water broke. My kids were both born within 5 hours. Good luck!
