Let the first number = x

Then the 2nd = 4x

the third = 5(4x) = 20x

Then
x + 4x + 20x = 500

25x = 500

x = 20 first number

4x = 80 second number

20x = 400 third number
,.

x + 4x + 5(4x) would be more correct.

x + 4x + 20x = 500

25x = 500

x = 20

20 + 4(20) + 5(4 x 20) = 500

20 + 80 + 400 = 500

If 4x is the second then thats 5 times 4x so thats 20x so its really x+4x+20x=500 or 25x=500 so x=20

Your problem is that you are setting up the 3rd # as 5 times the first instead of 5 times the 2nd. so you're terms should be written as
x=1st # 4x=2nd # 5(4x)=3rd # . Your equation would be written as :
x+4x+20x=500
25x=500
x=20; 4x=80, 20x=400

you're assuming the 3 numbers are all the same, but they're not....
x+y+z=500
you know:
y=4*x (second number is 4 times the first)
z=5y (third number is 5 times the second)

now plug and chug

x + y + z = 500
x + 4x + 5y = 500
5x + 5(4x) = 500
5x + 20x = 500
25x=500
x=20
y=4x=80
z=5y=400

ah dere is the mistake the third no. is five times the second
the 2nd no is 4x
so the 3rd no is 5*4x
if its jus 5x it will be five times the 1st no
so the eq is x+4x+20x=500
25x=500
x=500/25 =20
i think u cld find the oder two values by substitutitng the value of x

your third number is five time the second. so, 5(4x). it's supposed to be 20x.

x+4x+20x=500
25x=500
x=20
