1. expanding communist empires.
2.French rule was harsh: only the government was allowed to produce/sell alcohol & salt; rice was exported from huge French-owned plantations while many Vietnamese did not have enough to eat; workers in mines and rubber plantations could be jailed if they tried to leave their jobs; and taxes of every kind multiplied.
3.In 1945, Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam a free and independent country. However, the British and Chinese helped the French to return and the USA did nothing to stop them.
4.In 1954, after a massive Viet Minh victory over the French at Dien Bien Phu, peace talks were held in Geneva and Vietnam was divided at the 17th parallel. Elections were planned for 1956 but the South Vietnamese leader, Ngo Dinh Diem, refused to hold these.
5.The USA was worried about the spread of Communist power in Asia and Ho Chi Minh was a member of the French Communist Party.
Those are the reasons, you wright your report :P

The Vietnam War Began when Forces suported by communist North Vietnam began attacking the goverment and its officials in south Vietnam. For the first few years, these forces consisted of Guerrillas and terrorist commonly called Viet Cong Or VC. The Vietcong were opposed by the south Vietnamese Army(ARVN). The ARVN recieved Military Aid from the united states as well as economic aid. In 1965 Combat units of the US Army, Navy and Air Force began to take part.
The communist called the struggle in vietnam a "War of national liberation. They accussed south vietnam goverment of being a puppet of the United States and prommised to overthrow the goverment.
The United States never officialy decleared war. But the number of troops reached a peak of more than 543,000.
So simply put if you cant understand any of that (I can get ahead of myself somtimes),The North wanted control of the south.....and the south wouldnt have it... Kinda a civil war I guess if ya think about.

The country split with the North being sponsored by the Communist Chinese. The Government of the South asked President Eisenhower for military advisors. During President Kennedy's presidency he increased the number of military presence and our soldiers were allowed to return fire when fired upon.
When President Johnson became President in increased the number of American military numbers. However no one would actually allow our soldiers to go into battle to win.....
One of President Nixon's campaign promises was to get us out of Vietnam. The war had become very unpopular and many protests were made demanding we end our involvement in the war. When the last American was air lifted out of the country the Communists of the North over took the South reuniting the country as one.

We (USA) were communist paranoid in the 50's and 'Ike' President Eisenhower committed military advisor's there. Help South Viet Nam fight the northern communists. John Kennedy later verbally walked the fence as neutral and at the same time heavily escalated military advisers in the early 60's. They were really fighting by now. STILL OFFICIALLY ADVISORY. Kennedy did have a plan to get us out, some historians write, but he was killed before that happened. Johnson blew the doors off the whole war and heavily committed troops, money, bombing the whole nine yards. That military build up cost him the presidency in 1968. He did not run and left the white house in shame. Nixon came in like a bear wanting to win but eventually started to get us out. It took him years. We had about 550,000 troops there at the peak. Over 50,000 American deaths in Viet Nam. I was there twice and got caught up in false sense of patriotism. Our government lied to us. They lied to me. It was a war we could not win and would not commit to militarily. We eventually learned one cannot break or control the will of another let alone an entire country. Viet Nam was a national mistake and my own personal mistake. It was a dark and terrible time back home and a drain on the entire country. The dark days of the late 60's. It tore us apart just like it's beginning to do in Iraq now. No lessons learned there. Mr Bush is just another bad president that is caught up in his own personal war. I love this country but I hate our government. I hate the politics and I hate most the lies.

The usa Hates communism because they thought a democracy was the best form of government, and they didn't want communism to spread. So 50,000 Americans lost there lives for nothing. It can be considered part of the cold war.

It was primarily a fight against Communism, and therefore a fight with the USSR. It was part of the cold war.
