it is intermittent, but is continually present. even when i'm not working on it, nor running any programs.
I haven't really noticed it before.

the hard drive or the fan may be the culprit as these are the only moving parts. put your ear to it.........if the sound is coming from the inside, it is the hard disk..........if the sound is where the vent is, it is the fan.
If it is still under warranty, call HP or just take it to an HP authorized repair center.

I would bring it in to a repair shop if it is still under warranty.
There are a few different places the sound could be coming from.
Since you say it is steady, I am willing to bet it is most likely the LCD backlight.
If it was anything else, you would notice a change in the sound .
The only other things it could be would be:
The hard drive: this sound would change during use as the drive spins up.
The CD/DVD drive: Same as with the hard drive.
The CPU fan: This would change as the temperature of the processor changes, that is of course unless the fan management is messed up. Just to be safe, blow out the vents of your laptop with some compressed air.

No, it's not normal to have a humming / buzzing sound. Is there a CD or DVD in your CD/DVD drive? Sometimes that will cause the kind of noise that you describe. If your laptop is still under warranty, report this to your laptop manufacturer. Take care.

Hi. No. You may have a continuous hum caused by a drive but intermittent, no. May be a loose part inside.

It could probably be the CPU fan. Sometimes the screen may also make that sound.
