Evolution theory is a scientific fact, shown conclusively by empirical data.

Religion is a system of human beliefs unique to each individual. It involves material that is not empirical in nature (and thus is overly controversial).

The two disciplines are not associated and should not be compared with each other as similar ways of deciphering the world.

Think of it this way...
Science is physical investigation
Religion is metaphysical investigation

Why do you perceive a conflict? If you treat Genesis as a parable or the recounting of a tribal creation myth, the problem disappears. The vast majority of Christians, including Catholics and Anglicans (Episcopalians) have no problem at all with evolution and their faith. It is only a small group of very noisy fundamentalists, mainly based in the USA, who have fomented this climate of ignorance.

Do not pin your ignorance on the voting behavior of thte masses. Remember they elected Dubya. Evolution is the sole reason for our existence. It was not initiated or influenced by god. It occurs through random genetic mutation and negative selection of unfit genotypes.
