Boy, the experts are really out tonight, aren't they? Okay, the first thing you need to do is dig a little trench about the width of a brick around your tree or flower bed, about 4 inches deep. Put in at least an inch of builder's sand in the bottom. Take one of those small carpenter's levels (about a foot long) and go around the trench, making sure it's level. When it is, start bricking.
The mud is called mortar and you can buy it in 10 lb. bags at Home Depot or Lowe's. You'll need a trowel to apply it.
Every time you put down a layer of bricks, check them with the level before you put the mortar on top.
Have fun.

if it is not load bearing (dirt behind it), you don't necessarily have to use concrete. if it is say a nine inch stone, bury about 4-5 inches in the ground and back fill around it. I researched doing this myself but ended up hiring someone who will be using concrete. Good Luck!!

Not really sure. What I would do is check out www.1800TOPSOIL.com or call 1-800-TOPSOIL to see if they service your area. They're national and they're very good. They can also help you over the phone and describe what you should and should not do. Good luck!

If you are going to do it yourself, I applaud you. Back to the topic. Edger. Before you do anything, you must invest in a qulity edger. Grass seeds are prolific. Unless you beat your grass seed back, all your work will be for not.
