Theodore Roosevelt, (1858-1919), 26th president, once said, "To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."
Thoughts anyone?

ole T.R....if Lincoln represents the heart of America, T.R. represents the American spirit. his "bumper sticker" on projection of American power suggests soft power before use of force and goes like this..."walk softly;but, carry a big stick".

It reinforces the history of dissent in this country. Dissent has existed since the birth of this government and is vital to the health of our nation. It is morally treasonable to insist that the President not be criticized because we live in Republic that remains viable due to our citizens keeping both eyes on the government at all times. As American citizens we are the watchdogs of our own government, and we have a duty to speak out when we see something wrong. Anything less would open the door to creating a barely concealed dictatorship under the banner of a republic.

There is a distinction - one that Republicans couldn't seem to figure out in the Clinton era, and one that Democrats lost all memory of the moment Bush was sworn in - between the Office of the Presidency, and the actual individual serving as President at the time. The former demands respect, in order to preserve the institutions of the Government of the United States of America.

it's pretty much common sense...
we waged a war, the American Revolution, to get away from the idea that the leader was always right no matter what... to go back to that idea is spitting on the ideas of our forefathers...

Of course there should be criticism... but that doesn't mean everyone has to shut up and swallow it.
