The Philippines was named after King Philip II. who ruled spain during the time the Philippines was conquered by the spaniards.
It was actually named by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi as a tribute to king Philip II. he did that out of loyalty to the king or for just for lip service.

Here's the details. At first, It was Ferdinand Magellan who arrived at the Philippine Archipelago first to colonize it. But the natives in Mactan, Cebu led by Lapu-Lapu would not give in without a fight. A battle surged and MAgellan got defeated.

Years later, another explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, arrived at the Philippines but this time he befriended the natives instead of fighting them. Before the filipino natives knew it. They were already a colony of Spain and already named Philippines by Miguel.
