Depends on the kids, the subject being taught, the age of the kids, etc.
There are many different techniques, the trick is to find the ones that work best with the students you have right now. I tend to vary techniques-one day lecture, next hands on, then maybe a discovery activity, etc.

Right now I think it is the Montessori method. I love how the schools teach kids to read as they become ready, whether it is at age 3 1/2 or 4 or whatever. Also the basic math concepts the kids are taught.

Also homeschooling. Jessie Wise wrote a book on that and giving your kid a classical educaiton. Get her book. Fantastic and helpful.

Do puzzles at home and increase the complexity as kid matures.

Toss out the tv. The flicker shortens a child's attention span and there goes the easy time learning things. No tv until age 10 or so. Kids learn best from nature and from doing, not watching the tube.

interaction, talk to them and not at them. also sometimes to get them to remember give them imagery to help them better help them relate. eg. tree= picture of a tree. My earth science teacher was reall good at that. even with the hard stuff she found a way to see what she was talking about and not just hear
