When I am using my computer every once in a while a balloon pops up that says 'your computer may be at risk' because the Windows Firewall shut itself off. Why does it do this and how can I change it?

if you are using the Microsoft Windows Firewall, I suggest that you go to start, control panel, security and turn off the firewall. Windows firewall is no good, because you only get one way protection. Protects you only from incoming rogue packets. Does not protect as a real firewall should with two way protection. You have no protection from personal data leaving your pc without your permission.

Turn off, and download the free version I use from, zone alarm, free home for personal use. You will get two way protection, auto, updates and all new versions downloaded automatic over the older version.

Ok, the first thing it says is - Use the program's Update feature - perhaps your automatic Update is disabled. If this is an old program, this is an attempt for the software provider to get you to upgrade. According to the Windows Live OneCare site, this is a paid software that needs to be activated. "How much does the Windows Live OneCare service cost? Windows Live OneCare PC care subscription service costs $49.95 (USD) * (MSRP) per year ..." You can shut off the windows firewall and just use a freeware version like Comodo or zone alarm. It is possible a virus has corrupted the Live OneCare software, a virus scan would need to be done to see if it can be easily removed. While I like the reformat option (because I don't keep my files on the laptop, but USB sticks) you must have the OS and driver's disk from your laptop manufactor for easy reinstall.

Alright, I've had this problem to my computer. If you have Windows Live One Care, I would call Microsoft and ask them whats wrong. I'm not exactally sure what it was, for I was stupid not to ask, but they took over my computer and fixed it and it hasnt happened since.

I would do a search of all the running processes. It sounds as if a virus is turning it off.

ctrl-alt-delete to get task manager.
Go to the process tab.
Use google to search the name of each process that you are running. If one of them is a bug you will find it in about 20 minutes. This is the most surefire way to find out what is causing it.
