The best way to get started is check with your local FD in your state. Different states and cities do things differently. But, if you live here in FL, I can tell you how it goes.

The state of FL regulates the training of firefighters through the State Fire Marshal's Office, Bureau of Fire Standards and Training. You must attend a fire academy, there are several across the state associated with community colleges and universities, or attend the fire college located in Ocala. Before or after you attend the academy, you'll need to get your EMT at a minimum. Most FL FDs won't hire without EMT. After that , you can apply at any FD in FL. Some other states even accept FL certification.

Joining a VFD is a good idea, but in FL you'll be required to achieve a FF1 level before you can enter the "hot zone". One important thing though, you must be 18 years of age to begin FF training for a paid position and have a HS diploma or GED.

Best of luck to you!

Depends on where you live. My brother is a firefighter and he said you should just pop into your local firehouse and talk to the guys/gals who work there. They will point you in the right direction and may even be looking for volunteers so that you can see if it is really what you would like to do as a career choice.

If you are really serious, I would recommend an 2-year degree in fire science. Modern firefighters do a lot more than put out fires and rescue people. They are EMTs and Hazardous Materials responders, too. If all you want to do is fight fires, I'd recommend starting with a volunteer depertment to see if you like it.

there are a couple of ways you can go about this depending on where you live. most countys and your big citys have fire academys you can go to become certified you can also go to a junior college and take a fire science and haz mat course(this may not be available in all areas) or you can volonteet somewhere and sometimes they will pay for you to go to the academy or they will have class once or twice a month and you can become certifired through them but you just need to call a couple of places and talk to some firemen and find out for sure about what your county offers

Did you go to the fire department and ask them? In some cities it's necessary to take a test and pass it.
