That is kind of a loaded question. Is it a freshwater clam or a saltwater clam?

With freshwater your salt should be at about .20% and you use aquarium salt. The formula is 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt for every 5 gallons of water.

With saltwater you want a specific gravity of at least 1.24, possibly more for a sensitive clam, but if it is a saltwater one I would think you'd already have it set up that way, so I assume it is freshwater.

As far as feeding, frozen food is the best. I'd buy a flat pack instead of the cubed kind because you can choose the amount you feed instead of it being premeasured. You just need to thaw a very very little bit, the size of a small aspirin. Thaw it and give it to the clam. It is easiest if you use a turkey baster so you can get the food near the clam. I like bloodworms or brine shrimp when I buy frozen. Hope this helps you! You can email if you have more questions.

Another bad pet choice.
Try this.....
Find a large pot and a metal collander (a collander is a strainer, folks!).
Put about 1/2 inch of water into the pot, then place the collander inside.
Put the pot on the stove, and turn on the burner.Let the water come to a boil.Clams like it hot,you see.
Now place the clam, ever so gently, into the bottom of the collander
Put a lid on the pot and wait 5 or 10 minutes. If the clam doesn't open up that means he's been dead a while. It's really the only way to be sure, because these guys aren't exactly known for being frisky lil' critters. If that's the case then bury him, with family honors,in your back yard.
If the clam DOES open up,well....he's dead now,but still fresh enough to eat.So melt some butter while he's still hot,and give him a dip before you slide him down your throat.

Don't put any salt in the water!!!! Use fresh tap water, give the clam a light scrubbing with a light cloth. Place the clam in a container with fresh room temp water from the tap. Then crank the heat up till the clam is partly open. Remove, dip internals in butter and enjoy!

You really bought a clam at a pet store?

Clams are filter feeders. You can buy an invertebrate food at your pet store, or just crush flakes or pellets for fish very finely. Don't try to feed them large items like brine shrimp, but if you have fish, thaw the shrimp in a little tank water, feed the fish the shrimp, then squirt the very fine stuff in the water at the clam.

The amount of salt depends of if this is a freshwater or saltwater species. If freshwater, they don't require salt, but you can add 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of tank water. Use non-iodized salt for these (kosher, canning, pickling, rock, or aquarium salt). If it's a saltwater clam, the specific gravity should be 1.024-1.026.

Umm I don't know for sure but i think clams just like filter out all the microscopic thingys in the water and eat that. I honestly cannot think of what else they would eat.
And i don't know about the salt.
