The oxygen sensor takes a reading of the exhaust before the cat converter, it changes this info to voltage and sends this to the CPU, adjustments are made at the CPU to control the amount of required fuel .

Most cars have 2 oxygen sensors. One before the catalytic converter and one after it. The one before it is the one that tells the engine computer how much air/fuel ratio to adjust, this is the one that affects fuel economy. The other one after the converter monitors the catalytic converter activity is.

figures out how much oxygen is going into the engine so the computer can figure out how much gas to put in so you get the best air/fuel mix you can, therefore, the best burn and more efficiency
