Ron Paul because he has never voted for taxes. He won the GOP debates.

Independent candidates usually don't come forward until much closer to the election; It is almost 18 months until the Presidential Election!
There are 3 Candidates that are independent-minded. That is they are not subservient to the Corporate interests that fund the horserace candidates (Hillary, Obama, Edwards, Romney, Giuliani and McCain); the Corporate interests that like the status quo of an unaffordable For-Profit Healthcare System and half-Trillion Dollar Military budgets that line the pockets of the Defense Contractors and fund 737 U.S. Military Bases worldwide in over 130 countries.
If you are independent-minded and respect the U.S. Constitution vote for:
Dennis Kucinich
Mike Gravel or
Ron Paul

Independent candidates are not baked by a party. That means they are not involved in the party primaries. Most wait until after the primaries to formally enter the race. For the next 9 months or so, there is no such thing as a leading independent candidate.

No independent is going to win, but one could effect the election.
The only serios potential independent candidate is Bloomberg. He's probably the only one that counts, because for an independent to have a meaningful campaign he'd have to be rich, and Bloomberg is a billionaire.
If Giuliani or McCain gets the Republican nomination, an independent or 3rd party candidate could come in from the far right. Tom Tancredo is one possibility to do this.

There is no leading independent candidate. On 1/20/09, either the Republican nominee or the Democratic nominee will be inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States.

I'm not really too concerned about independent candidates. Why should I be when Representative Ron Paul (the Constitution's best friend ever) is running for the Republican nomination?

Rudy, mainly because he is so well known from 9-11 and his success turning around NYC from high debt, taxes and crime into a place of surplus, low taxes and far lower crime. Also, the US is on a path toward conservatism as more of the under 35 crowd comes from conservative families like mine with many kids. So that puts Rudy out ahead.
