The article of confederation wasn't adequate to govern/hold together the country. The founding fathers attempted to write a document that codified a system that captured the intent of the declaration of Independence. The Bill of Rights attempted to balance the power of the government with the rights of the people.
What The US was doing have never been attempted before. Order had always been imposed on the masses by the powerful. The Constition was attempting to provide away for the masses to choose their leaders without the majority running over the minority. The minority today attempts to use the safe guards to run over the majority.

During and immediately after the AmericanRevolution, the 13 states were each, in a very real sense, virtually independant--united only by the "Articles of Confederation." However, it quickly became clear that, as much as the colonists distrusted strong central governments, they had to have one that twould be strong enough to levy taxess, rais an army, and otherwise take charge of the common interests of the states.
The Constitution was the answer. It created a central government with enough authority to "get the job done."
However, while some sort of document/agreement was needed to do that, the primary purpose of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is to protect the civil rights and civil liberties of the citizens--and, beyond the simple mechanics of setting up a federal government, that is its primary function and the central concern of the dcument--and the sole reason for th eBill Rights.

Or it was written to promote an experiment in the most democratic, diverse, and free country at that time. . .
Representation may have been limited to white property owners, but it was still the most accessible government of the day - and today it has been expanded to even more. Radical diversity at that time was considered white people of all religions, but it has grown to provide protections for women and people of all racial descent. Freedoms are defined as God-given, so that the later governments are not legally allowed to revoke them. Freedom of speech and freedom to own guns ensures that the people will retain power against their government (even if the people are asleep and not paying attention and our government is out of control, we the people still have the power. We have not chosen to use it yet.)
One of the most overlooked reasons for the constitution was to simply limit the authority of the federal government (today's Washington DC). The original constitution banned income taxes as we know them, and reserved most laws and issues to be resolved by each individual state. The articles of the constitution provide explicit functions for each branch of government and it is implied that those are the only functions (Primarily: To build roads, establish a post office, provide for national *defense*, and settle trade disputes between the states.)
IF the government was again limited to the functions addressed in the constitution, I believe the states would be empowered to make amazing things happen by virtue of the federal taxation that is currently just being wasted on pork and other forms of corporate/federal corruption...

Boy, reading the answers to your question so far, shows
me a bunch of losers. These people need to go back to
a real history class and read about what happened many
years ago in this nation, and why.
And why would anyone use George Bush in answering
this question? He wasn't even born yet. That just goes to
show how many citizens now have so much "hate" in them.
It is really sad for me to see this. We used to be a United
States, but you young liberals are making us "Un"united
States which might eventually send US down the slippery
slope. Wise Up. Lighten Up. Put a smile on your face and
begin to see the good in others (even G. Bush has a lot of
good if you'll look for it).
I'm not going to list the reason the US Constitution was
written as I see those on-line here are incapable of hearing
the truth of history.

The purpose of the United States Constitution:
To create upon this earth a nation governed by the people for the people. That those who come to call this land home may enjoy the bountiful blessings which the Lord has rendered unto us so that we may prosper and express His greatness.
To establish laws unto which all men of this established nation shall find themselves neither above or below. That we the people of these United States may enjoy our property, our lives and our dreams which no man or government may unfairly nor unjustly take from us.
By this very Constitution we are the owners of this government and the controllers of its operators whom we select to their positions and may consequently remove if so desired.
My fellow Americans, remember this day and all the days to come that you are fortunate to live in a nation so rich in blessings and bountiful in spirit. Remain ever vigilant in the protection of your rights and authority over government. Let no man and no government ever detract from your rights as American citizens. Good night; God bless and God bless America.
