Most private lessons are expensive. It depends on who you are teaching....kids, teens, or adults. Maybe have a rate for each group? I would say between 12 and 20 per hour would be reasonable.

Start out by charging what you feel is right. If someone thinks it is too high, they won't hire you, so you've no need to feel bad about that, and if they are taking advantage, you are getting what you think is fair so you shouldn't feel bad.

Once you're just too busy to handle all the folks that want to hire you, raise the price some and only serve those that will pay the new price.

This is how the free market works, and it's a lot of fun to have this problem.

As you are just starting out $40 an hour would be reasonable it depends on the per capita area you are in. Check in the newspaper or ask a language teacher in high school or college what the going rate is as a lot of them do private lessons.

I would:

Find out the minimum wage in your state.

Check a college bulletin board to find out what they are charging. If you are fluent look toward the upper end of the money range.

Split the difference.
