Surprising avg even the free version got rid of viruses that none of the others could touch.
Stay away from the mainstream product - norton
PcCillin trend is also very good.
They have a trial version
NOD32 is also preferred by many
Spyware not viruses are are the major problem now and plague by far.
Spyware can easily shut down your broadband capacity to 20 %
regular scan of antispyware products with updates
adaware , spybot , the microsoft product and the trend product are all good.
Most of the products that are commercial are detect only
To remove the spyware you have to pay
spyware doctor , spyware sweeper.
No shortage
Just do the updates/
You can only have one antivirus program but many antispyware
You have to run a number of products as each finds diffirent parasites.

Normally I would say Windows Defender, but that slows down your computer a LOT. So don't get it. If you want good antivirus look for AVG free edition, for adware look for Lavasoft Adaware and Spybot SD.

Dont pay for an antivirus...use Avast, Panda, AVG free.
AOL stuff is junk.
Also use Ad-aware and Spyboy Search and Destroy to get red of spyware/adware.
Google them all.
If you mean Spam in email...check your email's spam settings.

In addition to a firewall you must have full time (active) virus protection and full time spyware protection.
All the following programs are free.
---------------------------------------------
Full Time (Active) Virus Protection
If you do not have active virus protection, install only one. All are excellent.
AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10669237.html?tag=lst-0-1
or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
or
AOL Active Virus Shield

---------------------------------------------------------
Full Time (Active) Spyware Protection
Windows Defender

---------------------------------------------------------
Install the following five programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all five. They will greatly increase your protection. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection.
Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)
Do not enable Tea Timer and SDHelper
After installation: update + scan + immunize

SpywareBlaster: Update then open and click “enable all protection”.

SUPERAntiSpyware free version: (update + scan)

CCleaner: Do not install toolbar option
