I have this same exact problem. Ignore everyone that says "Eat more!" or "Eat fast food!". This will not work.

Try going to a gym and adding 500 calories into your diet, so you wont burn everything off. Muscle weighs more than fat, so try gaining some muscle.

Besides eating (not McDonald's!) I would suggest that you do some weight training. Muscle weighs more than fat - so doing a little weight lifting will give you some help in gaining some weight. Also be reasonable about what you eat - thinking you can eat just anything is not the ticket. As you gain weight, you want to remain healthy and not set yourself up for any problems as you get older. 17 is still pretty young, and yes, your metabolism is quite high right now because of your age. Take care of your body now so that you don't end up paying the price as the birthdays start to go by. It is a fact that most people after the age of 30 - start to lose 1-2% of their muscle mass as each year goes by. When the muscle mass declines, the metabolism decreases. When the metabolism decreases and the person is not exercising regularly and eating right, the weight starts to creep up. That's why some people find that "middle-age-spread" at around age 40 or so. So, take care of yourself - there's an obesity epidemic going on right now - don't be part of it.

Eat more and do some resistance training so you put on healthy weight and only up your calories a little at a time until you figure out what the right range is. Typical healthy weight gain for a female is not very fast like .25 to .5 lbs per week, this is muscle weight gain. Once you get to the desired goal weight remember to back off on your caloric intake to a maintenance level. Make sure you eat a well rounded and healthy diet. As you age, and the whole mommy thing, you usually gain more weight than what is desired so let it be a slow and controlled process.

You are a teenager. Many teenagers are thin, but they put on weight automatically as they grow older. This is because teenagers have a very high metabolic rate and burn calories fast. So you should not try to put on weight by eating fatty food, since it will be difficult to lose this fat later. I found this info at http://www.toloseweight.org/gainweight.html

Eat a balanced diet with all the food groups and increase the portions until you gain a few pounds.
