My uncle has about a 5-6 inch oscar fish in a 55 gallon tank. He is beautifully marked...white with orange markings and and intricate pattern. My uncle has to get rid of him because he is terrorizing the other fish. If he sold it to a pet store or an individual, how much could he get for it?

It depends on where you take it, different stores have different policies. Oscars kept in that size tank are alright by themselves, but it isn't really large enough to support an oscar PLUS other fish, so it's a good idea to find a better suited home for him anyways.

For that size you are looking at anywhere from 15-30 dollars depending on where you sell it. You can try craigslist, sometimes people who really like them will be interested and make you a good offer. Most stores that sell fish will only give you half of whatever they can sell it for, so about 7-15 dollars if you sell it back to a store. It's a good idea to call ahead and make sure they are willing to take the fish.

Hope that helps!

You would certainly get much more from an individual than from a pet store. The shop is going to be selling to the same individuals you can sell to and would want a good mark up. Check around a few local shops to see if any have an oscar that size and how much it runs. Then run an ad in the paper for a little less and sell it that way. Of course, selling it to a shop or trading for store credit would surely be much easier.

not much since they are relatively abundant in the aquarium trade. most LFS don't buy fish from individuals, but your uncle might talk them into a trade. I personally would not buy a fish from an individual either because although you probably have the best of conditions in the aquarium, an individual is not a reliable source for healthy fish unless he be a breeder.

well the 2 inch ones go for about 12 dollars at petsmart. your best bet is to call a pet store and ask.

I think it would be easier to call the pet store, instead of asking us.
