My bf will be in South Carolina finishing his Master's and I'll be with family in Massachusetts. He HAS to be there for the birth. It's my first and there's no way I could do it without him. I'm due Oct. 18th according to my first ultrasound and Oct. 21 going by LMP. When should he start his two weeks off to ensure he'll be there in time for the birth?

The date that your LMP gave you, Oct 21, is a more accurate date of when the baby is due. On the average, birth occurs within 4 days before or after your due date. Does your bf need advance notice for his two weeks off, and how much advance notice? If he needs to schedule it now, you can have him start his leave on the 16th. Or, if you want, and if your insurance permits, you can request a scheduled C-section.

If your bf does not need advance notice, you can ask your doctor for an opinion on when your bf should start his leave. On the last month of your pregnancy, your doctor will see you every week and will check how much your cervix has dilated and effaced, which is an approximate indicator of how close you are to the birth.

Remember that labor has several stages: early labor (ave. 8 hours), active labor (ave. 5 hours), transition (ave. 1 hour) and pushing (ave. 2 hours). (Do research on this or ask your doctor.) Generally, you will be admitted to the hospital only when you're already in active labor. So, if you know that you're in early labor and can call your bf to tell him to come to you, chances are that he'll be there in time for the birth.

In my personal opinion, even if this is your first pregnancy, you can do this without your bf. When labor starts, there's no way stopping it. Ask your family in Massachusetts for support. Attend a birth preparation class with someone whom you're sure can be with you during the whole course of your labor, someone who can assist in telling the nurses / doctors of your needs (i.e. epidurals, pain relievers, etc.), help you relax and cope with the pains of labor.

When you go to your docs appt. he will let you know if you have changed in dialation and stuff like that. If you have changed I would say prepare to have him home. But consider some people are in labor for 18 hours and you might want him home at least a week after you have the baby.
