I miss being around my family and having fun together like that. It seems like no one here (LA) plays cards or anything. I want to find people that like being together and playing games. Any advice?

There are game shops and occasionally gaming & comic book conventions in L.A. The gaming & sci-fi/comic book communities tend to overlap. Maybe attend one, and find some like-minded opponents :)
Check places like Puzzle zoo, Gamekeeper, etc.

This is a forum for game groups and finding game players in various areas. There are a lot of helpful people on the boardgamegeek boards who I am sure will help you locate people. You can also search on the site for other users in your area.
If that doesn't help (though I bet it will), try a google search for your hometown + game groups, or looking for yahoo groups on the topic in your area.
