When I got married, it had nothing to do with being proud, I just felt like I won the lottery, I was so happpy.

My point of view is that if you feel marriage is just a piece of paper, then just stay single. Or do you have "sour grapes"?

Marriage to me is a Vow you make with God. Once this is done you become Husband and Wife. I am a wife to my Husband of almost 28 years I really believe more in the vows I took and have kept that came with that paper. I hope for some that marriage is more than paper. Because it seems to me it has become that for lots of people to hold up to use the husband or wife for good or bad you must Admit it is also a legal document that carries a lot of weight you see it can be more than just a piece of paper if you look a little deeper

I don't think it's just a piece of paper like you hear so many people say. Marriage is two people coming together and agreeing they will love each other no matter what life brings their way. You can do that with someone without a marriage license, I understand that, but it's just so much more special when you make that commitment legally. It just shows that you love that person so much and you are not worried about signing a piece of paper because you plan on being together until eternity. Maybe I'm way off, but this is just my opinion. And we are excite to get married because we have found that special someone to share our life with and who will be with us through all of the trials of life. You know you will always have at least one person in this world who will be there for you to lean on or to help pick you up when you fall. From the tone of your question, I'm assuming you've either not met your love yet or you've been scorned?! Am I right? If you had already fallen in love, you would know the answer to your question. Much luck to you in finding that special soulmate.... :-)

I think that marriage is a sign of commitment, almost like a promise if you will to stay together for the remainder of your lives no matter what shall occur. Marriage I agree should not be entered in lightly with the thinking that you can always get a divorce. It can be a sign of Respect for each other, to show you will always stand by one another, understand each other & accept them as they are. Well to me I just think it means more than a piece of paper. But people should not be allowed to get married until there 30 years old.

Marriage is not pointless. It is your declaration to the world that you love someone and want to spend the rest of your life with them. It is not just a piece of paper. My husband and I took sacred vows that not only mean a lot to us, but to billions of other married couples all over the world. Perhaps the reason that you think marriage is so pointless is because no one has ever cared to ask you.

It depends on how you value marriage. I was raised to respect the institution of marriage because it was and is an institution established by God.

It does seem the majority of people don't respect marriage or marriage vows nowadays, but that does not mean it is not sacred or special. It could mean everything to a couple who are SERIOUS about making a lifetime committment. If they're not serious, then, yes, it is just a worthless piece of paper and they've basically made a mockery of it and God, in my opinion. However, there are situations where a marriage that didn't work could not be helped (not meaning to sound judgmental).

Because making a lifelong committment to someone takes character. That is what marriage is; the paper just bears the signatures of those that witnessed the vows. But the vows, which in some phrasing or another repeatedly state "fidelity forever", are what make a marriage in any culture. Not a lot of people these days are willing to make the selfless, caring commitment to another person against all odds. That is something to be proud of.

Marriage is way more than just a piece of paper. It is two in love committed people declaring publicly their love, and their decision to be exclusively together for life. It entails all the legal ramifications as well. With out it there is no permanent bond. There is only two people saying we'll be together until something better comes along, or you get fat, which ever comes first.
The pride of marriage is in making that marriage work for life. Realizing that it's 24/7/365, and loving every minute of it. It's in taking the bad times, and triumphing over them with a loving spouse at your side. It's in seeing all the emotionally poor dumb lonely fools that think that they're too good for marriage, and laughing at their foolishness.

Marriage is more than just a piece of paper. That is just the legal part of it. Marriage is about a union between two people who have chosen to spend their lives together and letting everyone know this is the person that gives a reason to get up in the morning. The wedding is just a way of celebrating the union with friends and family. Marriage is religious and sacred, If you are not religious, than you need to find your own reasons for getting married and if you can't think of any, you shouldn't get married.

Everyone doesn't feel the same way that you do about marriage. I don't agree that marriage is "just" a piece of paper but i do think some people think that marriage makes them whole so they think they are better now that they are married. I also have seen that been married means nothing if both parties don't take it seriously. I've had to say to women big woo you're married but he's still cheating and disrespecting you. I would rather be single then married just to be married.
