I could tell you the answer, but it's better that you understand how to get to the answer so you can figure it out yourself next time.

First isolate the X.

Subtract 6/8 from both sides of the = sign.

x + 6/8 - 6/8 = 5 - 6/8
or
x = 5 - 6/8

Now make the 5 have the same common denominator so it's easier to subtract the 6/8's. To do that, you multiply it by 8/8, which is the same as 1. When you multiply a fraction by a whole number, you just multiply the top part. So...

x = 40/8 - 6/8

Now just subtract the 6 from 40 (you just subtract the top parts of fractions that have the same denominator).

x = 34/8

Technically, that's it, you're done, but generally teachers want you to reduce it to the lowest common denominator possible. So you have to figure out what number you can divide the 8 by to make it smaller that will still go into 34 evenly. Fortunately, you only have 2 choices: 4 or 2.

4 doesn't go into 34 evenly. It goes to 32 and has 2 left over.

But 2 will go into 34 evenly. 17.

So, divide the top and bottom parts by 2.

x = 17/4

ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ANSWER.

Does 17/4 + 6/8 = 5?

17/4 is the same as 34/8.

34/8 + 6/8 = 40/8, and 40 divided by 8 is 5.

So, yes, x = 17/4.

you need to isolate x so
subtract 6/8 from both sides of equation
x+6/8-6/8=5-6/8
x=4 2/8
simplfly
x=4 1/4

the answer would be 4.25

all you have to do is divide the number six by eight to turn the fraction into a decimal (.75) and then subtract that from five (5-.75) hence getting 4.25.
