i understand how to do synthetic division. it isnt too difficult. but what do you do if the number youre dividing by is 2x-3, or something where the coefficient in front of x is not equal to one? someone said u set it to 0, but what does that mean? what do you divide by?
thanks=)

Consider 6x² - x - 12 ÷ (2x - 3)
Now 2x - 3 = 2.(x - 3/2)
Step 1
divide by x - 3/2
3/2-----6----- -1------ -12
-----------------9--------12
---------6------8---------0
Q(x) = 6x + 8
Step 2
Divide Q(x) by 2
Q(x) ÷ 2 = 3x + 4
Thus 6x² - x - 12 ÷ 2x - 3 = 3x + 4
ie (2x - 3).(3x + 4) = 6x² - x - 12
Hope this example helps.

what you have to do when you are doing synthetic division is get the coefficient of x e = to 1. Do this by dividing the coefficent out. for the example above, you would ge x=3/2. then you can do division
