I am using a laptop and therefore, I have wireless internet connection. The problem is that my laptop is picking up the signal from my home router/host computer but it is unable to make any connections. I think the problem might be that the adapter on the host computer has a different name than the one that is on my laptop. If so, how do I change it so that they are both the same?

Another resolution I am thinking of is that when I go to "internet connections" from the control panel and under where it says "LAN/Hispeed," there is a "lock" image next to my network" Does that need to be unlocked, and if so how do I do it?

If that isn't the problem, does anyone else have any ideas on what could be wrong and how I could correct that?

Much appreciated for any help!!

There are several potential causes.

First, is the wireless activated on the notebook? The lock suggests it is off; right click and then click on the choice to activate. This may fix the problem.

If this does not work, check the router settings. Make sure DHCP is turned on and the pc's wireless is set to accept LAN IP address automatically. Make sure you have configured the router's security settings to permit your notebook admission (check for security settings, preshared keys, encryption, and MAC validation and be sure to address all of these). Carefully check the router's manual for details on how to do these things.
