I figure as long as the kids are still alive by the time you get home, my work here is done...
No, I actually loved playing with the little buggers and having fun with them when I babysat...but I DID lay down the law, and have ground rules set by the parents so they (or I) did not get into any kind of real trouble.

My boyfriend at the time and I were baby sitting a very young baby one night for a friend. Obviously you had to smoke outside, so we stood at the front door. We were so busy chatting away we never noticed the door slowly closing over. We were locked out, with the baby still asleep inside. I totally freaked. My boyfriend only lived around the corner, and ran and got his Dad's step ladders. Now my friend lived in a flats on the third floor. I was sure my boyfriend was going to fall and break his neck. I was terrified. Thankfully he safely managed to climb in an open window and safe the day. My friend still brings it up to this day.

No.
What if you do leave the kids run wild and they happen to wander out into the street and get hit by a car that can't stop quick enough.
I went to Sea World a few days ago and we were in the Shark Exibt and my Mother had to get in the Electric wheelchair because she can't walk hardly and she was watching the Sharks and she wanted to get out, well as she was trying to get out 2 little kids just got right in front of her as she was trying to get out. I of course got a little bit angry and I told them if you don't move my Mother is going to run you over because she is trying to make her way there. I asked them to move about 3 times and we finally got out and the Father just looked at me and I told him "Your kids need to have respect and move when someone tells them to move. You should have been responsible, so don't give me that look. You should repect your elders" He didn't say anything but it just shows what Parent's are doing with their kids.
As far as babysitting them, if you were to do the same things the Parent's do how much you want to bet if they were running out in the street just like the Parent's do how much you want to bed that
1) You would be fired
2) They would tell your parents
3) They might report you to the Police.
I respect any babysitter who was the guts to take a child out and tell them to behave and not wander off in a store. But I would never leave a child run.

I looked after a toddler for almost a year, and I swear I had more rules and discipline than his mother. She gave him whatever he wanted and let him do anything, but eventually he learned not to be that way when I was watching him. I really hate bratty children so I would never let them run wild.

I didn't used to be till I had my own kids. Now I know it's impossible to have things the way I want and I'll go crazy trying so I let my hubby's laidback ways take hold here.... But no, the kids do NOT get into stuff that's dangerous for them. Just not good for ME, like crayons.... Strangely enough, mine are well behaved and polite in public.

No - couldn't live with the fact that i could have provented the child from getting hurt. If i let the child run around, and the child contracts a serious enough injury, and i know i could of prevented it from stopping and watching the child, i'd feel terrible.

No. I'm the kind of babysitter who falls asleep on the couch while watching The Shining.... and the kids are left to watch it. :D
