theres a thing in the body called the citric acid cycle (aka kreb's cycle, aka the tricarboxylic acid cycle, aka the TCA cycle). its the basic biochemical pathway for producing ATP (energy) from sugars, fats and proteins.

citric acid is one of the chemicals in this 8-step cycle, and if you are starting from glucose (a sugar), its your first stop in the cycle

I would caution you against thinking that too much citric acid is not bad for you. All things can be poisonous if given in too high of a dose.

Not that this compound is too harmful, though. Contact with the dry form can cause irritation of the skin and/or eyes, and a very few cases of intolerance to citric acid ingested have been documented.

Citric acid is an important molecule for energy production in all living organisms. All food is degraded through thousands of reaction to acetyl-coenzyme A, which is added to oxaloacetate to form - CITRIC ACID. Citric acid is further degraded to finally yield CO2, and energy in the form of ATP.

While I'm sure that citric acid can participate in digestion schemes (I never figured those damm things out), I have never heard of someone having citric acid deficiency problems.
