It is easier to argue the affirmative. Your thesis could be as simple as "The Cold War was inevitable." In your intro, define the Cold War, Yalta, and Potsdam, and end with the thesis. In your body, discuss economic systems in one paragraph (capitalism vs. communism), government in another paragraph (democracy vs. totalitarianism), and post-war plans in a third paragraph (the Atlantic Charter and free trade vs. Satellite Nations and reparations). You might also want to discuss the bad feelings caused by the USSR's high losses in WWII and Truman's use of the atomic bomb as a bargaining tool. If you really want to impress your teacher, discuss US intervention in the Russian Civil War and the first Red Scare of the 1920s!

First thing you gotta do is think about the topic and formulate your opinion. Then back it up with three reasons.

That's your thesis, the answer to the question.

The Cold War was (or was not) inevitable due to (reason 1), (reason 2) and reason 3).

And the great thing is, once you have your thesis, the whole organizational backbone of the paper is done.

One last thing, DO NOT use the words I THINK or I BELIEVE in your paper. In fact, keep yourself out of it. It's your freakin' paper, we know whose ideas they are.
