y = -3x + 7

The information given here tells you a lot. When y = the intercept, then x = 0. From what they tell you here, that means the point (0, 7) is on the line, since the y-intercept is 7. When the x-intercept is 7/3, y = 0. So the point (7/3, 0) is also on the line. Now we have two points from which to calculate the slope:

m = (y - y ') / ( x - x')
m = (7 - 0) / (0 - 7/3)
m = 7 / -7/3
m = -3

We can also calculate m directly from the the coordinates of one of the points. Using the point (7/3, 0), we get:

0 = m (7/3) + 7
-7 = m (7/3)
-7/(7/3) = m
-3 = m

Using the slope-intercept form for the equation of a line, y = mx + b, since we now know that m = -3 and b = 7, we can just substitute those values into the equation to get:

y = -3x + 7.

As a check, let x = 0. Then y = 0 + 7 = 7. Then let y = 0 and find the corresponding x value:

0 = -3x + 7
-7 = -3x
-7/-3 = x
7/3 = x

So our solution appears to be correct.
