I need to sing a pop song for an audition for 'Bye Bye Birdie." I don't know why I have to sing a pop song, but that's what was on the flier.

I'm a soprano...and, uhhh, I'm auditioning for the roles that are 'a small step above chorus.'

Oh you should be Ursula, Kim's friend and Birdie fanatic.

Pop songs are stupid....you should sing that annoying song from High School Musical.

They likely want a pop song because several songs in the show are written in a pop- and rock-sounding vein. Still, the majority of the show is decidedly theatre music, so it is an odd requirement. Nonetheless, it is their requirement, so your best bet is to sing the pop selection -- and let them know you have something available from the musical comedy rep.

If you want a recommendation, I'd do something older and upbeat. When I've both coached stage performers and auditioned actors as a music director, it's been my impression that Bachrach's songs work very well for auditions -- they have strong tunes, interesting chord structures, and usually lyrics that have a bit of flair. I had a student one time who always did "There is Always Something There to Remind Me" by Bachrach/David whenever a pop song was required, and it often scored her work or at least a callback.

What part are you auditioning for? It seems odd that they want a pop song... did it perhaps specify a pop song if you're auditioning for Conrad?

In any case, it's hard to make a suggestion without knowing your vocal range and the part you want. I would look at the character and choose a song that embodies him/her. Usually I suggest something from the same composer, but a pop song is a bit harder to come by.... maybe something from Grease or Footloose so that it's pop-inclined, but still theatre? :-)

Good luck!
