I mean spirit as in the spooky stuff you can't see. I believe each of us is a spirit occupying a physical body. Just because we have not yet figured out a way to see our spirit or measure it does not mean it does not exist.

I also believe chemicals play a huge role to dramatically enhance or cut off our emotions, yet I do not believe these chemicals actually create emotions.

Aren't interconnected electrical impulses jumping synapses really the generator of thoughts and emotions and not chemicals?

Emotions are largely derived from body chemicals.

Emotions are not evidence of spiritual "activity" since emotions are so fickle.

A better evidence of spiritual activity is logical thought or activity of the moral conscience, which are easier to define, and are more logical than the unreliability of emotion.

I can find you some good documentation on the glands and chemicals involved in emotions. They are understood well enough that therapist can control them with a host of chemicals.

I have yet to see anyone document any magical spirits that cause them.

Chemicals in our brain ARE our emotions. The good news is by pushing your metabolism UP, such as aerobics, you emotions also go UP. The spirit enjoys when you are happy, as does the body.

I don't dispute the fact that emotions are chemical processes in the brain, but the influence our social upbringing has had in forming the neural pathways in our brains cannot be underestimated. Our socialization into this world, through our parents and life experiences, assists us in forming how we see our selves and our existence, or our 'spirit' as you say. If emotions are chemical reactions, which indeed they are, they have been predetermined by our construction of our social world through our experiences, which can be said to be your essence or 'spirit'.
