WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States threatened new UN sanctions to punish Iran's nuclear drive as it ratcheted up tensions with the biggest display of naval power in the Gulf in years.

Hours after a bristling US armada led by two aircraft carriers steamed into waters near Iran for exercises Wednesday, Iran defied the threats and pledged that its controversial atomic program was expanding.

"The enemies aim to prevent us from using peaceful nuclear technology, not for scientific reasons but because they want to eradicate the roots of the principles of the Islamic Republic," Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Thursday.

"With God's help and power we are getting closer to our final aims because the enemy is exerting its last pressure on the Islamic republic and it will have no result," he said.

A day earlier, the UN nuclear watchdog said Iran was defying UN Security Council demands to stop enriching uranium and was expanding the work

threatening other nations (especially iran) for years and then treating them disrespectfully, even after they try to ease the tensions, is part of the reason why so amny countries want to build weapons.

why can't anyone see this?

lol. George already couldn't find wmds in Iraq (the justification for the war). Mahmoud basically has the monkey (chimp in this case) on a string. The terrorist (bin ladin) from Afghanistan spent like a couple g's on attacking us while we spent 300 billion on both Afghanistan and Iraq. So you tell me who is winning the war. We haven't found the terrorist mastermind and Iraq is in shambles. The dumb thing is we waste money on a show of force that was done a month before especially when even the dumbest of dumb know how strong the US military is. Mahmoud knows we are just crapping money away. We can't afford going to war with Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran especially when we can't help US citizens here.

Worst case, the US drops a few bombs on the nuclear facilities, sets the program back a few years, and Iran has Hezbollah, or one of it's other terrorist clients, kill some Americans.

If you want to call that a war, fine, but by that definition, we've been at war with Iran since '79.

We're kind of stretched thin for soldiers as it is. If we go to war with Iraq we are really pusing the limit on waht our armed forces can handle. We don't have the money, the manpower, or the willpower. Ouir Triumphalist President is going to have to get his head out of the clouds and learn some diplomacy, or hire somebody who can do the job for him.

We do not have enough troops to deploy for an invasion. We would just have to bomb the crap out of them right to start with. Short and sweet and probably a lot cheaper than invading would be.

It certainly looks like Iran wants a war. But it's a few years off.

It's getting scarier and scarier but no one reacts! No one says let's fight him. He is our President. He answers to us not us to him! It's time to stop all this madness!

Iran should be a dumping ground for all of our artillery and cruise missiles.......as long as we ship them there flying.
