Were you taught the right way to type? I never learned but on my own. I'm pretty fast when no one's standing over my shoulder or if I'm being tested. I look at the keyboard and type in my own way.

correction: I only look at the keyboard to correct mistakes. I use both hands tilted to the left.

Are you sitting down?
I went to school in the dark ages. At that time, boys were not permitted to take "Secretarial" classes which included keyboarding (typing). (Additionally, girls were not permitted to take "shop" or "Auto mechanics")
I had to learn to type on my own, on a typewriter, as a young adult. I type the "right way" using all fingers and one thumb and I do not look at the keyboard.

Yes, I was taught how to type, which comes in very handy on Answers, because I can get from question to question pretty quickly. The last time I was tested, I typed 75wpm, although I was never tested for keystrokes per minute, because I worked in Customer Service, and it wasn't necessary.

I know what you mean about being nervous if someone is looking over your shoulder, and faster when they are not. It's kind of like they are waiting for you to make a mistake or something. I am the same way.

But however you type, if it works for you, and you are speedy enough for your own purposes, that's all you need to worry about.

Hope I helped.

I took a typing class in school and didn't do well. I then found a software called Mavis Beacon, you can purchase it at bestbuy for like $5-$25 depending on how detailed you would like it to be. It was so easy and fun like a computer game, and I actually learned how to type doing it. I totally recommend it to anyone who wants to learn. I don't have to look at the keys anymore and since I have been doing it for a while now I don't even have to think of what they keys are anymore, I just kind of automatically know what I have to press to create the words. Cheap and Easy, what better way!
Oh yeah, it also tells you how fast you are typing, and what letters you are good on and what need work, if you are transposing certain letters or what. It also tells you how quickly you are learning and slowly progresses to harder ones like numbers and symbols.

I was taught to type the right way in junior high and I still type the correct way because I think you can type quicker if you dont have to look at the keyboard.

Yes, I was taught how to type, but I think I bend some of the dumb rules. I never look at the keyboard, though, and I can use the 10-key like nobody's business!

I learned on my own when I was in fourth grade. I type with two hands correctly, but I'm sort of slow on the numbers at times. I think if I really want to type fast, I can go 80 words per minute.

My dad made my brother and I learn how to type using the good ol' Mavis Beacon typing programs. From grades 2 through 6, we were also required to do a little bit of Mavis Beacon daily so yea, I was taught how to learn properly though those lessons could be so annoying at times!

my siblings actually went to typing class so i know the ideal way to do this. i've even bought my own typing practice book many years later to try to learn. unfortunately, i'm pretty fast the way i type despite the fact that it's riddled with spelling errors and typos. i'm just too impatient to start out slow with the right way of doing things.
