I was watching the river as I rode home on the bus today. (lol) I noticed that the river was flowing pretty fast one way and for some reason or another there were tiny little waves moving upstream. I want to know what the some reason or another is. Can anyone tell me why there are waves going the opposite of the current?

Was it windy? wind waves can move in the opposite direction of the waters drift. It is only the surface of the water that is moving as a wave while the rest of the water is going down hill.

The water may have been hitting some rocks or a little sand bar underwater and it made the water bounce off in the other direction and appear it was flowing differently.

you said it, these were tiny waves.. chances are, the water flow hit boulders along the valley so the water bounces in the opposite direction but these will eventually flow along the general direction which is downstream.. the river flow is turbid whenever there are boulders, rocks strewn along the valley floor...
