I think you'll be better off if you buy a USB external writer(even DVD writers are available)
Because the replacement of the in-built CD-rom with a CD/DVD burner might be costly BUT it is possible.
Contact your manufacturer for the details

If your laptop is old (5 years or older) get a new laptop. If that's not within your budget then ensure your laptop has USB connection. (see * for more details about USB)

External CD/DVD burners are usually backward compatible so your old laptop should support any burners on the market. (see ** for example of external USB at Best Buy)

Check with Sony. They may market a replacement cd burner that will replace the cd reader and I suspect they do.

If not, see if you can get an external device that connects to the notebook via USB.

Yes, you can attach an external CD/DVD burner to your laptop via USB port. To get a great deal, I would recommend going to www.newegg.com. They also offer great reviews from previous customers who purchased the device earlier.

External burners here:

Once you attach the burner you should install any required drivers. Newegg offers both fullsized and portable external burners.

Yes you can buy a whole new cd drive to replace the one you have. I don't know exactly what king you would need but you don't have to buy a new laptop. Best Buy or Comp USA should be able to help you out with that.
