I don't want to install a sump pump pit and I don't really want to use the old fashioned bucket method. Is there a way to empty the pool of its icky water? Is there a pump of some sort that is stand-alone, with one end going into the pool, through a vacuum, and then spitting out that water somewhere else?

If the cord you're referring to is the power cord, it is not intended as a control device, and should not have done this. If anything, doing this may have caused the pump to turn on, if the cord was accidentally lifting a float-switch. Long-shot that you caused a faulty cord/plug to power the unit up, but I'd be more inclined to replace the pump switch. I've seen installations where the cord kinda came out of the sump well, hanging in mid-air, and put enough strain on the connection between the plug and receptacle/wall socket that that connection began to fail, so take a moment to check that out too, especially if the receptacle is maybe getting a little old. My wife would insist on just getting a whole new sump pump, not entirely a bad idea, actually.

Is it above ground? Use a syphon to get as much as you can out. Might take some time though. If it is an in-ground pool then you are going to need power to get the water removed. A powered pump or muscle power and buckets.

ready to open the pool for the hot months === you can rent a pump from any commercial contractors rentals store ... if you play it right you can rent it for 1/2 day [[ at some stores by agreement ]] pick it up at 5minutes to 5 o'clock and then return it at noon ...... this is where a rental is really the way to go ......

your pool doesn't have a pump? How do you filter it?
You can buy cheap pumps, probably at places like harbor freight.
