No, that idea has been around since I was in grade school in 1950s. Its just not going to happen, we have an integrated system, that uses both. To many of us have no clue how far a Kilometer is but we have a good concept of a mile.

You know how tall 6' is but how about 2 meters? Not as easy to visualize. I am 5' 7" no problem, but what about 1.54 meters, again we cant visualize that.

There is no such thing as the American system. It is the United States Customary System, which is based upon the old English system of measurements. Also, Americans do use the metric system but only on nutrition facts and measuring the quantities of different chemicals. And, Americans already switched the metric system once by replacing miles to kilometers on road signs. That plan failed. So, now Americans use the customary system again. The English doesn't use the English system. They use the metric system. :) The U. S. should use the metric system because it will be parallel with the kind of measurement that the world uses.

We were supposed to do that back in the '70s but everyone apparently decided it would be too hard because the push for it fizzled out.

It would make sense to use the same measurement system as most other advanced countries and to use a simpler one, at that, but apparently the switch over sounds like a big headache to folks.

From an efficiency and logical point of few, yes. But it is very difficult to get a society to change from a system it has been using for an extended period of time, because people inherently resist change.
