My wife has used Dance Distributors to purchase shoes. They have an excellent selection of shoes. Click here: http://www.dancedistributors.com/index.cfm?CAT=10&VEN=0&ACT=prod%5Fcategory&&page=2

The least expensive character shoe they sell is about $19.00: http://www.dancedistributors.com/index.cfm?act=prod_detail&pln=3430&cat=10

However, the Capezio Junior Footlight in leather is $39.35: http://www.dancedistributors.com/index.cfm?act=prod_detail&pln=4294&cat=10

The same shoe with taps installed is $47.25: http://www.dancedistributors.com/index.cfm?act=prod_detail&pln=3500&cat=10

With each item description comes a recommendation as to whether you should order the same size as your street shoe or a smaller size. For those unfamiliar with dance shoes, they tend to be tight when you first purchase them, yet with use they stretch.

In talking to parents of tap students, the trend is to purchase shoes with taps installed.

I really like these blochs. The taps are attached. You can order them in black and they're really comfortable. They are also $29.25 which is a bargan compared to other character shoes.

The sizes are pretty true to what the site says. It's probably not cheaper to buy the taps separate from the shoe. I tried that and had a bad experience.

An awesome dance shoe and clothing store is Discount Dance in California. Try their web site - they have everything at great prices and will help you over the phone if you have sizing questions. I buy all my daughter's dance stuff from them. They are so much cheeper than stores like Capezio and Danskin.
