George Brett is far and away the better of the two. There is no argument for Schmidt, look at the stats. Brett played 300 more games and had almost 40 points higher on his career batting average, 900 more hits, and 900 less strikeouts.

As far as fielding stats, Brett committed 36 fewer errors, had a .970 fielding percentage vs .961 of Schmidt (this includes time both players spent at 1st base), and had 2700 (yeah 2700) more putouts than Schmidt.

The only thing Schmidt could do better than Brett was hit the long ball. He had 200 more HRs, but yet still finished his career with the same number of RBIs. Again, Brett is far and away the better player.

Mike Schmidt, and it's close. Basically, they were the same player, except Schmidt was a slugger who was the best defensive 3B in National League history, while George Brett was a high average hitter who could run a little bit. Both have one World Series ring to brag about...

They were both great players. If I were a manager I'd rather have Brett though. In addition to having a better average, comparable fielding percentage and less than half the strikeouts in 2000 more at bats, Brett was the best clutch hitter I've ever seen. You always knew your team was in trouble when he was at the plate with the game on the line.
Post Season stats are a little telling here as well:
Brett 43 games .337 10 HR 23 RBI
Schmidt 36 games .236 4 HR 16 RBI

George Brett was my favorite player so I have to go with him. Close call due to Schmidt's home runs advantage, but Brett really muscled up in the post season! He is the only player I have ever seen in baseball that just single-handedly took over a playoff series - and he did it several times. If Brett had not been injury plagued ( and like Mantle - partied WAY too much), his numbers would have been off the charts.

Although the concensus is that Schmidt is MUCH better than Brett, and I was leaning towards Schimdt, I looked up some numbers that astonished me. These are the numbers, and they are undisputed.
Brett 21 yrs Schmidt 18 yrs
games 2707 2404
AB 10349 8352
Runs 1583 1506 push
Hits 3154 2234 Brett+++
2B 665 408 Brett
3B 137 59 Brett
HR 317 548 MJS++
RBI 1595 1595 push
BB 1096 1507 MJS+
SO 908 1883 Brett+++
AVG .305 .267 Brett+++
Fld % @ 3B .951 .955 push
SB 201 174 push

Both men personify baseball at the elite level, but the misconception that Schmidt's numbers are soooo much better is simply wrong. MJS has better HR numbers, but not better hitting numbers, and nearly similar fielding and base running numbers. Advantage Brett.

Mike Schmidt's numbers across the board are much better than Brett's and that includes defensively with 9 gold gloves to Brett's single one. Three MVP's to Brett's one.

The only thing that Brett has on Schmidt is career batting average which is 38 points higher than Schmidt's. And he also had more clutch hits in his career in big games than Schmidt did.

Definitely Schmidt. Brett had the higher batting average, Schmidt the better on-base percentage due to his walks. Better fielder. 3 MVPs to 1. A World Series win and MVP. And, while both played in pitcher's parks, Schmidt had half again as many home runs. He's easily better.

both were great power hitters. make mike has a small edge.
brett edges out schmidt on contact hitting.
fielding schmidt edges out brett barely
moustache -well, that's mike. but if george would have had one............
intensity - brett - attacking an umpire for being called out for excessive pine tar. legendary.

i think most people would go with mike schmidt, but for whatever reason, maybe watching him hit 2 homers in one game back at tiger stadium in the 80's, i'm going with brett. it's a very close call though.

Let's have some fun, and ask, who is better., Mike Schmidt, George Brett or Brooks Robinson.
All 3 are where they belong, Cooperstown.
