Mitchum could portray some pretty scary dudes! He was very menacing in "Cape Fear." He made my skin crawl!!!
And check out his great performance as the wicked 'preacher' in the 1955 "The Night Of The Hunter." Another really 'bad boy' part.
It's Robert Mitchum, hands down!!!!!!!

hands down robert mitchum, de niro is not scary enough i mean he just looks a drunk that would throw an empty bottle at you not stalk you down and wipe out a family. now if they would have put in rob zombie that would scare the crap out of you for sure.

Most always, I lean toward the classic version. However, in this case, my vote goes to De Niro. By far, that was his creepiest role ever!
