You do not provide enough information to determine he answer. 40 as an average comes from the sum of a number of data points divided by the number of points. You need the number of data points which went into figuring the 40 average at least. Say you have already taken 2 exams and scored 35 and 45 on each, which averages to 40 and now you score 100, (35+45+100)/3= 60. However, if you had 3 data points, 35, 40, 45, which still averages to 40 and add 100, then the average becomes (35+40+45+100)/4=55. See how the number of data points can affect the average and why it is no one can answer this question??

It depends on how many grades makes the 40 average.
If you got a 30, a 40, and a 50 that makes up your 40 average and you add a 100 to it that would give you an average of 55.
But, if you had a 30 and a 50 and then added the 100 you'd end up with a 60 average.
Add up the scores, divide by the number of scores, that's how you get your average.

depends on how may grades make up the 40 average. If the 60 is made up of two grade, then you add the 100, it will bring it up to 60. The more grades, the less the 100 will help.

we need more information. It depends on how many numbers made up the average of 40. You need to take the previous numbers (which averaged to 40), add them up, then add the 100 to those numbers and divide by the number of numbers.

I hope this isn't a math class, hun. You can't answer the question with the information you provided - you need to know how many grades went into the 40 average.

You need to find out how much each of the grades is weighted. Do they both make the same contribution toward your final grade? If they do, then you could figure your grade this way:
Total points = (0.50)(0.40) + (0.50)(1.00) = (0.50)(1.40) = 0.70 or 70 out of 100.
If the weights are different, then different totals will result. We cannot tell what they are without pure speculation.
