Since the energy of the reactants is higher than that of the products, the excess energy must be given off to the surroundings. Remember energy cannot be created or destroyed - it must pass from one thing to another.

C. Greater than the energy stored in the bonds of the products because Change in H = entropy which is the amount of heat gained or lost in a reaction. If Change in H is positive, the reaction is ENDOthermic. If the Change in H is negatice, the reaction is EXOthermic because the heat from the reactants is released in a exothermic reaction. So, the energy in the reactants will always be greather than in the bonds of the products in an exothermic reaction.
