I'm looking to dye something that is light blue polyester to more of a rich purple color. I tried your basic rit dyes, but of course it didn't work (worth a try though :) I know that it requires really high temperatures and assistance from other noxious chemicals to get polyester to take color; but is there an easier way? A spray paint? A full color transfer? If I have to resort to high temperatures/chemical mixes what is the safest way? Will it be safe to wear afterwards? Thanks!

I know that my daughters do pageant and all the moms paint there material everything believe it or not. They are using apple barrel acrylic paints and liquid fabric medium, dipping it and lightly wringing it and then they heat set it in the dryer and then reapeat until they get the color they want. They are painting pretty much all materials. But if you want try going to http://www.voy.com and then putting in the search fashion cents as the name of the board and these moms will be happy to answer any questions you have about dying any kind of material since they do stretch velvet, organza, crinolin, super stretch. But that would be my suggestion and they are really helpful. There is also archives on this board that you can read through of how they do certain paints and such.
Hope this helps you out.

i think using spray paint or fabric paint (even if it is diluted) would not be the best choice because it would cause the fibers of the fur to stick together. This might give it a matted look from far away. Also you will never get a pure black when dying it (black are just really dark colors). If you dye it a darker color you run the risk of not getting a black cat but whatever color the black is based on (for example a red based black might dye it a dark red). This is important because fabrics can only be dyed so far. since it is already dyed you probably cannot get it to a black, but just a dark color. Don't bother with Dylon because it is basically high quality RIT dye. If you do use fabric paint I recommend Jacquard, which you can find in craft stores like Michaels and JoAnne's, it's easier to find than dyna flo

nothing is going to dye polyester, thats why its dyed usually as its extruded in the yarn, they do print on it though, you might get it to take painting on with acrylic. usually its easier to buy it in the right color to start.

You could try boiling it in the dye with water for a long time.
