You need to give a lot more story than that. How did the lock break? Whose responsibility was it to make sure the lock was working. Whose responsibility was it to see that the lock should be fixed. All sorts of questions need to be answered to figure out if firing a person because of a broken lock is fair or not.

Details are needed. The concept of fair is also based on your perception of what is fair and what is not fair. the law is not always fair. In many states it is legal to fire someone with out cause. In other states the law says you have to have cause and document it is that fair to a private employer to be forced to keep someone on payroll that they do not want to. this means that they are paying someone with there personal money to keep working even if they do not like them or they are just not working out.

If I was you I would go to your local unemployement office and look up the employment laws and see where your rights are and go from there.

An employer can fire you at any time. In this case it sounds like you were fired for negligence.
