im sorting out my start up thing to speed my laptop up and am unsure of what NEEDS to be turned on...can anyone help me?

Search for each file on the Internet and see if you need it or not. That's the best way since there is no way for me to know what you have starting up right now.

If you have an anti-virus program that needs to load at boot time. That is the only critical thing. You can usually live without the rest.

Try unchecking them all in msconfig and if you find you that you need any of them then put a check mark next to them.

Try going in insafe mode and seeing what process are running then noting those down see what happens when you switch the others off one by one. be sure to backup and have a boot disk to hand if something goes wrong.

you need your board, proc, and ram to power up. if you want to be able to see anything you will need video to be pushed to the monitor, if you need to interact you need a keyboard. this will at the least get you to your BIOS (assuming all are working correctly)
if you need to get into your OS you will need either a harddrive, floppy or optical drive

if your talking about hardware, just go to your task manager and start ending procs until you get an error message or a restart message =)
