This is kind of a "chicken or egg" question. Which came first, trench warfare, or accurate, rapid fire rifles?

In the early 1800s most guns were not very accurate and were hard to load. They could only be fired slowly and at close range. So in the American Revolution and the Napoleonic wars the battles were mostly fought by lines of soldiers standing pretty close to each other, shooting, then charging with bayonets.

By the time of the American civil war (1860s) most of the guns were rifles which were still slow to load, but which were pretty accurate at long distances. Then towards then end of the Civil War there started to be repeating rifles which could be fired much faster. It simply was insane for soldiers to line up and shoot at each other. They started to dig holes to hide in... that was done a lot in the later stages of the Civil war.

By the time of WW I there were very efficient machine guns. The idea of standing in lines was like suicide, and even the idea of rapidly charging the enemyy lines led to huge slaughters of 10,000s of soldiers in a single day. (Like the Battle of the Somme in 1915) So, the soldiers dug very elaborate trench systems. On the western front of WW I the lines hardly changed at all for nearly 4 years. Towards the end of the war the tank was developed. That helped to break the stalemate.

In WW II there were a lot of very good tanks so there were only a few places where elaborate trenches were created. Mostly the war consisted of troops moving from place to place trying to outmaneuver each other.

Trench warfare sucked for the soldiers involved. Everytime the fronline advanced, new trenches had to be dug. You had to wait for a cessation of fire from the enemy and try to charge in without being killed.

Problem was, their side was protected with razor wire. It lead to the development and use of other weapons, like mustard gas. Weapons like this (chemical/biological) are now "inappropriate" for battle because of these times.
