Use Safe Mode, by pressing F8 or Turning the computer off when the loading screen is on. Restore it to the date before this happened. If not try opening task manager by crtl-alt-del at the same time and open new task at the file menu, then type rstrui.exe.

I suspect some maleware was downloaded and this is fouling up things. It sounds like either there is a worm or a hijack of sorts going on. A worm engages in a meaningless repetitive process that continues to expand and ultimately hogs all the processor capacity. The pc often freezes up and sometimes the monitor shows a blue screen. A hijack takes over the pc and the pc seems to do its own thing. Icons can vanish, and all sorts of unpredictable things can happen. If you can key in Control Alt Delete (punch all 3 keys simultaneously) and get Task Manager to display, then go to the processes tab and click on the CPU column heading to sort in decreasing % of use. System Idle should be at the top; if something else is and if it sticks at the high 90% level, this is the culprit. Write down the process name; go to another pc, conduct a search engine search for the process and see if it can tell you how to fix it. If there is no fix, or if you cannot get to Task Manager, you will have to reformat the hard drive. This is drastic as it will completely wipe out all of your disc contents (so if it is not backed up it will be lost). To reformat, you will need your system restore discs that came with your pc. You will need the driver disc as well to reload the device drivers. If you don't have these contact the pc maker and get new ones (and you will have to pay for them most likely). The reformat will take 2 - 4 hours. Use a consultant if you are not comfortable with this. It is not hard but it must be done right. If you want to salvage files from the hard drive, you can remove the hard drive, install it as a slave in a second pc and copy the files to the master drive on the second pc and recover the files. You may also transfer the maleware if you are not careful and this infects the second pc. If you update virus protection on the second pc and get all the Microsoft updates on it before installing the defective drive as a slave you may get lucky and end up purging the maleware with a virus scan - but this does not always work.

You're in a tough spot but I know no other fixes.

My recommendation to all is to stay off most of these sites as they are maleware exchange forums too often. I tell this to all my customers. I do computer service and maleware repairs is one component of it.

Try starting Windows in Safe Mode (press F8 just before Windows starts to load). If it boots into Safe Mode, it's a problem with Windows. Try running a spyware and virus scan and also chkdsk.

Try having her press the F8 key while the computer is starting. This will allow her to get into safe mode. If she can get into safe mode there is most likely some sort of virus or spyware on her system.

Hi There

It really depend on what operating system are they running, if it is WINXP, just hit "F8" key while computer power on, then that will show up a menu then choose on "saft mode", if they can get saft mode to work then run with system restore and restore to the early dates, then it should be work fine again, but if no luck with system restore then the only solution will be backup any important data and give a clean format and reinstall your windoes.

Sounds like a necessary Windows system file got deleted or corrupted and is therefore causing it to fail. Your only real solution would be to either:

A) Reboot using the Windows disc that came with the PC and attempt to "Repair the current installation of Windows"

or

B) Reboot using the Windows disc and starting with a fresh install (you -will- lose everything off the pc)

Make sure Explorer is running when windows boots. Hold ctrl+shft+esc after computer starts. Click processes tab. Look for Explorer.exe in the left column. If it is not there, click the applications tab, click new task, type explorer.exe, click ok.
