I love Bernstein's passion and emotion and energy when he's conducting. Growing up watching John Williams, I love his elegant, graceful way. I also enjoy watching Claudio Abbado.

Leonard Bernstein.
* He still is a great example to me. In many ways. I Bought a dvd set with all Mahler Symphonies, with one extra dvd containing rehearsals on th 5th and 9th Symphony. Fantastic to see.

Riccardo Chailly
* I saw him conduct a Strawinsky concerto, which was great.

Seiji Ozawa

Claudio Abbado

Ozawa

I saw him in an open rehearsal when I was really young, and I just remember being in completely awe that he moved with every note of the piece, he flowed, he jumped, he cried. And he was so into the music that he knew the entire thing.

I watched him finish conducting, say "violins you missed a note in measure 357" and THEN open the score. He knew exactly where everything was, without ever opening the score.

He just knows the music so well. It's sad to watch someone else conduct the BSO.

I'm also a fan of Andre Reiu, how he plays and conducts and has as much fun as the audience when he performs/conducts.

I've heard Eric Whitacre is a fabulous conductor as are most conductors at the Metropolitan Opera. The USM Symphony conductor, Jay Dean, is fun to watch as is the conductor of the Mobile Symphony.

I also have a video clip of the Wiener Sangerknaben doing a concert in Vienna. There singing the Tritsch Tratsch Polka by Strauss. I don't know the conductor's name, but his facial expressions bring a smile to my face.

Bernstein was always fun to watch, but I also like Michael Tilson Thomas. James Levine usually looks like he enjoys what he's doing, and Riccardo Muti can be a showman at times.

I have really liked the conducting style of Sir George Solti. He always seems so intense and masterful that you know for sure that he is in full control of his orchestra. And there is something about the hurky-jerky way that he moves around on the podium that really appeals to me..
